In Vinnytsia, enterprises installed more than 10 MW of solar power plants for their own needs

Despite the challenges of war, Ukrainian companies are actively implementing green projects aimed at reducing their environmental and climate impact and improving the ecological situation.

EcoPolitic has prepared for its readers the TOP-10 Ukrainian companies that are actively working in this area.

It is worth noting that some of the companies in the rating reflect trends in the development of the green transition, and the TOP itself is not based on accurate calculations of the positive environmental impact of projects.

In 2022, the company launched a bio-thermal power plant based on its own waste (wood chips), which has a thermal capacity of 8 MW and an electrical capacity of 2.2 MW. Thanks to the CHP, the company supplies itself and about 8 thousand families with energy. Every day, 110 tons of wood chips are burned at the biothermal power plant, which produces 52,000 kWh of electricity, of which 45,000 to 47,000 kWh enters the power grid.

The company became the first in Ukraine, which, despite logistical difficulties, shipped dry ash for export to Poland, which is actively used for decarbonization of industry. Such ash is formed as a result of fuel combustion at thermal power plants and is a raw material for the production of concrete, aerated concrete, cement and construction mixtures.

Ukraine can potentially become one of the main sources of raw materials for the production of cement in countries such as Poland, Slovakia and Romania, because it has more than 250 million tons of such waste.

In August 2023, the company "Ukrvtorresurs-Bukovyny" launched a waste sorting line, which had not been used for several years, at the solid household waste landfill in Chernivtsi. The Kamianets-Podilskyi cement plant agreed with the company to purchase 30% of the community's solid household waste. The plant will process high-calorie waste (film, rubber, etc.) into an alternative fuel for its kilns to produce cement.

  • DTEK;

The energy company DTEK during the war launched the first phase of the Tiligul wind power plant in the Mykolayiv region in 2022. It consists of 19 wind turbines and has a capacity of 114 MW. The wind farm provides energy to 200,000 households and avoids 400,000 tons of carbon emissions per year.

The launch of the power plant, which is located 100 km from the front line, became a landmark event that demonstrated to international partners that it is possible to invest in Ukraine today without waiting for the end of the war. In addition, the Tyligul wind farm was set as an example for the government of Great Britain, because only the Staffordshire wind farm with 1 MW of two turbines was launched in the country during the full-scale war in Ukraine.

During the SOR28 climate conference, DTEK and Vestas agreed on the construction of the second stage of the Tyligul wind power plant, which will increase its capacity by 384 MW.

Also, DTEK plans to build a wind farm in Poltava region and during the war restored a number of solar power plants mutilated by the occupiers.

"GreenCool" LLC, which manufactures refrigeration equipment, is one of the largest industrial plants in Vinnytsia. In September, a 600 kW solar power plant was installed on his roof, which will be able to fully meet his energy needs in the summer.

In addition, in the community, enterprises installed more than 10 MW of solar power plants for their own needs, which provided green energy for about 10% of consumption. This development of RES capacities was achieved with the help of the city's business support program.

The company "Waste Management Center" and "Danone Ukraine" are implementing a joint project on the processing of expired dairy products and baby food. Thus, milk residues are processed into biogas at a biogas plant, and the packaging is either recycled for reuse or incinerated to produce energy.

  • Garbage sorting;

The European Integration Law No. 2320-IX "On Waste Management" entered into force in Ukraine on July 9. He launches the garbage reform, in particular, replaces the concept of "waste" with the concept of "raw material" in order to make recycling attractive for investment. The law for the first time introduces the concept of extended producer responsibility, i.e. the obligation for companies to collect and dispose of packaging and other waste from their products. Although the relevant draft laws No. 10061, 10061-1, 10061-2 "On packaging and packaging waste" are still being worked out, some large supermarket chains have already launched a separate collection, for example, "Silpo", Metro and Novus. The initiative was also supported by smaller chains, in particular, the store chain "Aurora Multimarket" opened the first full-fledged garbage sorting point in Poltava.

  • Rejection of disposable cups;

A number of coffee shops in Kyiv, Lviv and Vinnytsia offer a discount to visitors who take coffee in their reusable cups, instead of disposable paper cups. This allows reducing the amount of garbage, and eco-responsible Ukrainians save money. Similar initiatives are implemented by other coffee shops in different cities of Ukraine.

Also in Lviv in 2021, a reusable coffee cup service Zero Cup. So you can take a drink in a coffee shop in a reusable cup, pay a deposit for it, and then return the money by returning the dishes to another establishment.

  • Collection of batteries;

In 2023, the ATB supermarket chain collected and sent it for recycling 211.6 tons used batteries, which people bring in special containers. During the implementation of the ATB project, 311 tons of batteries, that is, about 15 million units, were sent to specialized factories in Romania and Poland.

In addition, in 2023, the company Promo Service and "Give up the batteries!" sent over 200 tons of batteries for safe disposal. Taking into account other organizations that are also engaged in collection, at least 10% of all batteries end up being recycled, despite the absence of legal norms regulating the collection of such waste.

  • Fertilizers from spoiled vegetables and animal manure.

An enterprise in Volyn "Green Farm" is engaged in the processing of organic waste into biohumus with the help of Californian worms. In a year, the company processes about 160 tons of such waste from the Lutsk community into 100 tons of organic fertilizer.

These are just a few examples of Ukrainian companies that actively work on green projects and direct their activities to preserve the environment.
