The rating was topped by the Swedish city of Gothenburg

The Global Destination Sustainability Index has identified cities around the world that are taking steps toward a sustainable future with minimal carbon emissions.

It is reported by The Global Destination Sustainability Index.

The rating was based on the following indicators:

  • waste recycling
  • air quality;
  • availability of bicycle lanes;
  • environmental friendliness of public transport;
  • rooms in hotels certified as environmentally friendly;

The first place in the ranking was taken by the Swedish city of Gothenburg, which was recognized as the most environmentally friendly in the world from 2016 to 2021. The city provides the best conditions for owners of electric vehicles, and almost all public transport runs on renewable energy sources. Also, Gothenburg is actively fighting against the use of disposable tableware and plastic.

Analysts noted the dominance of Scandinavian countries in the ranking, as they are the most active in promoting sustainable development. For example, the city of Oslo has made a significant leap from 10th to 2nd place, thanks to improved strategy and successful project implementation. Copenhagen remains in third place, and Helsinki has risen from 12th to 4th place.
