The European Commission has announced five selected projects for the competition € 25 million for the development of "demonstration beacons" of the New European Bauhaus (NEB), which will involve citizens in the green transition at the local level.
The projects will create more sustainable, inclusive and beautiful spaces in 13 countries, said European Commission.
The Commission is currently negotiating grant agreements with selected beneficiaries for development.
NEB aims to combine the world of art, culture and education with science and technology. Horizon Europe plays a key role as a major driver of new ideas, prototypes and products, as research and innovation are key components in the development, delivery and dissemination of NEB.

Each project will receive funding of approximately € 5 million to implement its plans in 11 member countries (Belgium, Czech Republic, Germany, Denmark, Greece, Croatia, Italy, Latvia, the Netherlands, Slovenia and Portugal), as well as in Norway and Turkey.
The projects will address topics such as building renovations, circulars, art, cultural heritage, education, smart cities, urban and rural revitalization, and more.
Projects:
- CULTUURCAMPUS (Cultuurcampus: a sustainable center of art, research, learning and community as a catalyst): by combining education, research, politics and culture, and taking into account the life experiences of its inhabitants, Cultuurcampus seeks to transform a disadvantaged urban area of South Rotterdam (NL). The Cultuurcampus will be housed in a historic building and will be a hub for various groups and events.
- NEB-STAR (New European Bauhaus STAVANGER): NEB-STAR will demonstrate how territorial transformation plans can incorporate the principles and values of NEB in Stavanger (Germany), Prague (Czech Republic) and Utrecht (Netherlands). The project will address four iconic issues related to climate-neutral cities, taking into account local needs and concerns by working together with residents and stakeholders.
- NEBhourhoods (NEBhourhoods): NEBhourhoods prepares Munich-Neuperlach (DE) for the future, as envisaged by the European Green Agreement, when it comes to the embedded environment, circularity, mobility, energy, food and health. The project will build on the strengths of the district - a strong sense of community, huge green spaces, large-scale housing, even if it needs reconstruction, and eliminate its weaknesses - unemployment is above average and education is below average.
- DESIRE (Designing the Irresistible Circular Society): the project seeks to address the main challenges facing societies and cities: climate change, biodiversity loss and resource issues. Based on three main themes: inclusion, the cycle and reconciliation of cities with nature, the project will use art, architecture and design to explore alternative ways to transform areas in different European cities (DK, NL, SI, IT, LV).
- EHHUR (EYES HEARTS HANDS Urban Revolution): The project supports cities and vulnerable residents in transforming their built environment. Distributed in seven different locations in the EU and associated countries (DK, EL, BE, PT, TR, HR, IT), it will seek to address socio-economic and cultural issues such as social segregation, energy poverty and the degradation of unpopulated historic centers.
The projects will bring innovative ideas and solutions over two years, helping to identify ways for NEB's next steps. As they spread across Europe, the projects will deliver a variety of results that can be adapted and replicated in Europe and beyond, helping to inspire future projects.
The projects will also support EU missions, as both initiatives address serious health, climate and environmental issues through closer engagement with citizens and exploitation and innovation.
The CRAFT (Creating Actionable FuTures) project will support all five selected projects, as well as future NEB lighthouse projects, by involving € 2 million. He will test joint local models of NEB transformations in three "sandstone cities" (Amsterdam, Bologna and Prague) and will manage 100 cities selected as part of the "Climate Neutral and Smart Cities" mission.
