The Austrian steel company Voestalpine shipped the first batch of low-carbon steel coils from greentec Steel Edition from its metallurgical plant in Linz.

From the end of 2021, Voestalpine offers all flat steel rolling Steel Division with a reduced carbon footprint, according to a press release companies.

"Demand for high-quality Voestalpine steel with low CO2 content is increasing. On June 13, the first rolls of greentec Steel Edition steel were shipped from the Linz plant," the statement said.

According to the company, metal products made using Steel Division technology with a reduced carbon footprint are used in the production of wind turbines and the automotive industry.

Carbon emissions during steel production are reduced by partial replacement of coke with hydrogen.

"Today, a clean steel market is emerging. We can meet the growing demand by offering our greentec steel Edition products. In this way, the company contributes to global climate goals," said Voestalpine CEO Herbert Eibensteiner.

In addition to optimizing the production process, the company pays special attention to the use of renewable energy sources.

"Approximately 70% of the electricity we consume in Linz's steel production is generated through the use of gases that are a by-product of the production process. Our remaining energy portfolio is gradually being converted to renewable energy," added Voestalpine board member and steelmaker. division of Hubert Zaychok.

Note that greentec steel is Voestalpine's 2021 plan to decarbonize steel production. An important first step is the gradual transition from blast furnace to hybrid electric steelmaking technology from 2027.

Before EcoPolitics reported that in Austria the only producer of crude steel Voestalpine has developed a phased plan for the production of green steel with a neutral carbon content "Green ceiling".
