In 2023, electric vehicles will account for less than 8% of all new car sales in the US

The administration of US President Joe Biden has finalized rules on vehicle exhaust emissions, which stipulate that 56% of new cars must be electric starting in 2032.

This will help avoid 7 billion tons of carbon dioxide emissions over the next 30 years, BBC reports.

It is noted that the US government has chosen a compromise option, namely, made concessions to automakers and reduced the rate of new electric cars from 67%. However, the target of 56% should also accelerate the transition of the automotive industry to electric vehicles. In 2023, electric vehicles accounted for less than 8% of all new car sales.

The article emphasized that car manufacturers that do not meet the new standards will face severe fines. Companies will still be able to produce cars with gasoline engines, as long as they make up a smaller percentage of their overall product line.

It is added that representatives of the US automotive industry supported the slow pace of electric vehicle deployment, but said that the goal is still "extremely ambitious." The environmental community also supported the measure, although some activists expressed disappointment that it was not tough.

The EU and the UK have adopted a ban on all sales of gasoline-powered cars from 2035.

CNN emphasized that the new rules also provide for the production of hybrid cars that combine gasoline engines with battery-powered electric motors. This segment is expected to play the role of a transitional component to achieve the goals of reducing air pollution.

Earlier, EcoPolitic wrote, that a report by Rho Motion research company showed that in 2023, sales of fully electric and hybrid cars grew by 31% worldwide to 13.6 million.

As EcoPolitic previously reported, an analysis by the Rhodium Group research company showed that in the United States in 2023, investments in the latest climate technologies increased 10-fold and reached $9.1 billion.
