The EU has set strict limits on emissions from newly registered passenger cars

Switching from pickups to small vehicles could more than halve the world's car emissions.

So on average, a small car emits about 1,470 kg of carbon each year, and a pickup truck emits 3,510 kg, which is 2,040 kilograms more. says Omar Al-Ajaji, senior climate change and sustainability consultant at EY, on LinkedIn.

He cited an infographic from Germany's Statista that shows the carbon emissions of vehicle types based on 15,000 km distance traveled.

In addition to pickups, SUVs (2550 kg) and sports cars create the most CO2 cars (2460 kg).

Also, middle-class cars create much lower emissions – 1515 kg.

Statista noted that in the EU set strict limits on emissions from newly registered passenger cars. From 2021, this will be an average of 95 grams per kilometer for the manufacturer's entire fleet, and from 2030 the limit will be reduced to 61.75 grams.

“These requirements create a strong incentive for car manufacturers to produce and sell more fuel-efficient cars with lower CO2 emissions. If they don't follow the rules, they face a fine," the authors noted.

As EcoPolitic before, the ministers of environmental protection of 27 member states of the European Union agreed reduction of carbon dioxide emissions from new cars to zero in 2035.
