Despite the large reserves of fossil fuels, the Emirates are actively engaged in the development of renewable energy technologies

Masdar, a state-owned company of the United Arab Emirates, has launched a renewable energy facility that will produce 1 GW of clean energy without interruption.

This was reported by Reuters with reference to the company's chairman, Sultan Al Jaber, who is also the CEO of the energy giant Abu Dhabi National Oil Co (ADNOC) and the UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technologies.

Speaking at the opening of the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week on January 14, he called the project a significant step in turning renewable energy into a source of mainstream energy supply.

“This is the first time in history that renewable energy will become the main energy supply. This is the first step that can be a giant leap,” said Al Jaber.

The CEO also noted that the rapid growth of energy-intensive applications such as ChatGPT could lead to a 250% increase in electricity demand by 2050, reaching 35,000 GW. This emphasizes the need for diverse energy sources to meet the unprecedented demand, he added.

Earlier, EcoPolitic reported that the UAE launched the world's largest solar power plant with 4 million double-sided panels. It has a capacity of 2 GW.

UAE oil giant planned to invest $15 billion in the “green” transition.
