This will help reduce emissions in the production of chemicals

European companies TotalEnergies SE and OMV AG are preparing to launch plants in the EU that will produce synthetic oil from plastic waste.

This is reported by enkorr.

In 2025, Total will launch France's first industrial plant for on-site chemical processing in France. It is located in Grandpuy near Paris, at the site of a former oil refinery.

Together with a partner, the company built a pyrolysis unit there. When it reaches full capacity, it will be able to process 15 thousand tons of waste per year. This biofuel plant should start operating next year.

OMV plans to launch the plant at its refinery in Schwechat near Vienna by the end of the year. It will have a capacity of 16 thousand tons. In the future, OMV plans to increase production and increase its annual capacity to 200 thousand tons.

These biofuel plants will use a method alternative to the more common mechanical processing. The used plastic will be returned to the state of liquid oil for re-processing.
