Registrations of cars with diesel and gasoline engines saw the sharpest decline

In April, the new car market in the European Union totaled over 972,000 vehicles. This represents a year-over-year increase of 5.1%. However, the electric vehicle segment saw the most significant growth—nearly 38%.

This was reported by UkrAvtoprom, citing data from the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA).

At the same time, sales of new diesel and gasoline-powered cars fell the most.

Overall, by powertrain type, the “ranking” of passenger car registrations looked as follows:

  • hybrids (HEV) – 359,056 (+12%);
  • gasoline vehicles – 218,485 (-16.3%);
  • electric vehicles (BEV) – 200,117 (+37.7%);
  • plug-in hybrids – 95,565 (+16.4%);
  • diesel – 73,982 (-17.1%);
  • other – 25,110 (-7.5%).

EcoPolitic previously reported that the situation in the new electric vehicle market in Ukraine deteriorated significantly after the reinstatement of VAT during customs clearance. The dynamics of the segment are supported by the resale of used vehicles on the domestic market. While around 400 new electric cars were imported in April, more than 6,400 deals were recorded in the secondary market.
