The heat and strong winds may spark new fires

In Greece nearby Athens, the second large-scale forest fire of the season rages for the second day,

It happened due to extremely hot, dry and windy weather, which scientists associate with climate change, reports Reuters.

It is noted that due to the fire, hundreds of people, including the elderly, were forced to evacuate throughout the country. In addition, fires have already killed people 20 people. The Greeks are also evacuating domestic and domestic animals.

The authorities of Athens said that due to the heat and strong winds may cause new fires.

"Conditions remain difficult and in some cases extreme," said Ioannis Artopios, a spokesman for the fire brigade. "All Civil Defense forces remain on alert and extinguishing the fire."

He said 202 firefighters and volunteers, along with 65 vehicles and 15 planes, were battling the blaze about 20 km north of Athens, near the village of Fili at the foot of Mount Parnassus. Some equipment was transferred from Sweden and Germany.

"The capital is shrouded in smoke and ash after a fire broke out on Tuesday [August 22]," the report said.

It is noted that on August 22, rescuers found 18 burned bodies, presumably migrants, in the Evros region in northern Greece. The region borders Turkey and is on the route of migrants from the Middle East and Asia.

The material said that fires broke out near the port city of Alexandroupolis and on the island of Evros. Summer forest fires are common in Greece, but they have increased due to climate change.

Let us remind you that in July in Greece on the island of Rhodes, a large-scale forest fire occurred, which destroyed the island for about a week and also forced the evacuation of thousands of tourists and local residents.

As EcoPolitics previously reported, a number of European countries have been battling forest fires for several weeks, as record temperatures and a lack of rain created conditions for large-scale fires across the continent, forcing authorities to evacuate thousands of people.
