The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) adopted a resolution in which it found Russia guilty of committing the crime of ecocide by undermining the Kakhovskaya HPP.

It is noted that the resolution contains a number of points related to the political consequences of Russia's aggression against Ukraine. Among them is the recognition of the aggressor country as guilty of complicity in the commission of a war crime – ecocide – by blowing up the Kakhovskaya HPP dam.

PACE is one of the two statutory bodies of the Council of Europe. The Assembly considers topical issues related to the problems of modern society and various aspects of international politics within the framework of the general mandate of the Council of Europe, which covers such areas as the protection of human rights, the development of democracy and the rule of law.

The members of the European Parliament condemned the undermining of the Kakhovskaya HPP dam and named it war crime of Russia. The European Environmental Bureau also published a statement regarding undermining Kakhovskaya HPP which deeply condemned Russia for aggression that led to extraordinary environmental and humanitarian consequences.

As EcoPolitic previously reported, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) approved a historic resolution on the negative impact of war on the environment. The document defines the concept "ecocide" and adds it as a new crime in the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court.
