MEPs called for new sanctions against Russia

The deputies of the European Parliament condemned the blowing up of the dam of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station and called it a war crime of Russia.

The aggressor country must bear the consequences for this crime, according to a press release from the European Parliament.

MEPs urged the EU to continue strong support for Ukraine and impose new sanctions against Russia. In addition, they offered to use the billions of frozen assets of Russian oligarchs to restore Ukraine.

This happened during discussions on expectations from the EU summit on June 29-30 regarding the latest developments in Ukraine and progress in concluding the EU Migration Pact.

It is noted that the deputies of the European Parliament also discussed:

  • green and digital transition;
  • law on the restoration of nature;
  • future review of the EU long-term budget;
  • the need for the reindustrialization of Europe.

Earlier, EcoPolitic wrote, that the European Environment Bureau released a statement on blowing up the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station, in which Russia was deeply condemned for aggression that led to extraordinary environmental and humanitarian consequences. The agency called on the UN, the International Criminal Court and its member states to consider the destruction of the dam as a war crime against the civilian population and ecocide on the territory of Ukraine and beyond.

As EcoPolitic reported earlier, the head of the Kherson OVA, Alexander Prokudin, said that the estimated amount of environmental damage due to the explosion by the occupiers Kakhovska HPP reached €1.5 billion.
