Environmentalists want to collect 50,000 Ukrainian votes per week

The European Parliament is being asked to veto the EU taxonomy, which could help Russia earn billions of euros and get a share of potential investment, as well as hinder the chances of curbing global warming.

The corresponding petition, on the eve of consideration of the proposals of the European Commission on natural gas and nuclear energy, was created by global campaign Stand With Ukraine Campaign, according to the "Ukrainian Environmental Group - UNCG" on Facebook.

"We support the call to the European Parliament to veto the shameful and dangerous decision to grant access to green finance for new gas and nuclear infrastructure projects," the conservationists said.

The material explained that the implementation of the classification of gas as "environmental" fuel will mean more investment in one of Russia's main sources of financing.

"Our goal is to collect 50,000 Ukrainian votes in a week," the UNCG writes.

Greenpeace analysis showed that Russia, thanks to this decision, will be able to earn additional 4 billion a year. The expansion of gas capacities in the EU will provide 32 billion by 2030, and including nuclear power in the taxonomy would allow Rosatom, the state-owned nuclear power company with strong commercial ties to the European nuclear industry, a share of about 500 billion.

In addition, it will hurt the chances of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees, as new investments in fossil fuels will mean that Europe and the world will miss the Paris Agreement's collective goal of 1.5 degrees, plunging the world into climate chaos. Also, this step will increase Europe's dependence on gas, including Russian, it will be catastrophic for the environment.

Recall Greenpeace declared that Russian gas and nuclear lobbying threatens energy independence of the EU.

As EcoPolitiics reported earlier, the second list of technologies that can be included in the green taxonomy, including natural gas and nuclear power, triggered a series of debates.
