The Government of Ukraine approved the Water Strategy for the period until 2050 and the operational plan for its implementation in 2022-2024 without additional funding.
The strategy includes 5 strategic goals, which have 40 measurable indicators of achievement, and tasks related to them, reports DiXi Group.
It is noted that the Strategy defines the main principles of state policy in the field of water use and protection and reproduction of water resources. It is aimed at achieving mutual agreement related to their use, increasing the level of water security and reducing risks on the basis of sustainable integrated management of water resources.
Strategic goals of the Water Strategy:
- ensuring equal access to high-quality drinking water that is safe for human health and appropriate sanitary and preventive measures;
- improving the quality of water bodies, in particular achieving and maintaining a "good" eco- and chemical state of surface waters, in particular natural, artificial and modified, as well as underground waters;
- provision of the necessary amount of water resources for the restoration and improvement of water ecosystems and the achievement of sustainable water intake and water supply;
- reducing the growing risks of water shortages and excesses;
- introduction of integrated management of water resources according to the basin principle and the principles of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) regarding water governance in the areas of river basins, in coastal and sea waters.
The authors emphasized that the goals should be implemented according to the principle of "water pays for water" at the expense of the state budget and other sources, including international technical and financial assistance.
They noted that according to the Government, the implementation of the Strategy does not involve additional funding from the state or local budgets.
As EcoPolitic reported earlier, Cabinet approved the Water Strategy of Ukraine until 2050. It is designed to solve the main water problems of the country, in particular, equal access to high-quality drinking water, improvement of the ecological state of waters, prevention of droughts, floods, etc.
