Ukraine develops plan for updated Nationally Determined Contribution

Ukraine should contribute to the global fight against climate change

The Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources has published a revised draft of the Cabinet of Ministers' order "On the approval of the plan of measures for the implementation of the Updated Nationally Determined Contribution of Ukraine to the Paris Agreement for the period until 2030".

The document defines key measures that will contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions to achieve a carbon-neutral economy by 2060, the Ministry of the Environment reports.

It is noted that the draft order will stimulate the fulfillment of Ukraine's European integration obligations in the field of environmental protection. The document contains key measures regarding:

  • electricity and thermal energy production;
  • supply of energy resources;
  • industry;
  • transport;
  • buildings;
  • Agriculture;
  • waste;
  • forest use, changes in land use and forestry;
  • science, research and technology.

In the explanatory note, it was emphasized that the post-war reconstruction of Ukraine should be based not only on the reconstruction of the destroyed, but also taking into account climate goals, the green transition and the transition to a sustainable economy. Ukraine, as a candidate for EU membership, should bring its legal regulation closer to the European one, strengthen competitiveness and energy independence. And also to contribute to the global fight against climate change and contribute to the fulfillment of climate commitments.

Earlier, EcoPolitic wrote, that Ukraine had to approve the plan of measures for the implementation of the second Nationally Determined Contribution to the Paris Agreement by the end of 2022 and create a climate fund.

As EcoPolitic previously reported, in July 2021, the Cabinet of Ministers approved the updated Nationally Determined Contribution of Ukraine to the Paris Climate Agreement, which provided for a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions to 35% from the 1990 level.
