The Port Authority of Rotterdam, Netherlands, has reserved a site on the island of Maasvlakte for the construction of a plant for the production of green hydrogen with a capacity of up to 1 GW.
There is already a water main near the site, and there are also plans to build the IJmuiden Ver wind farm and a hydrogen pipeline near it, the Port of Rotterdam reports.
It is noted that the area of the site reaches 11 hectares. The hydrogen plant and the wind power plant are planned to be built by 2028.
The report emphasized that the production of hydrogen directly on the coast is a logical solution, as it avoids additional load on the high-voltage network.
The press service of the port said that several companies are already building electrolyzers in Rotterdam with a total capacity of 1.35 GW. The port plans to reach 2-2.5 GW of green hydrogen capacity by 2030, and the government – 4 GW across the country.
It is noted that in in the coming years, more and more wind farms will be built in the North Sea. Part of the generated electricity will be used for the production of green hydrogen, which is an alternative to natural gas.
The message explained that the production of hydrogen directly on the coast has a number of advantages, because:
- no need for additional high-voltage cables on land;
- production will be next to industry - the main consumer.
The press service said that the Amaliahaven high-voltage substation (380 kV) will also be built near the reserved site. This is the destination of the 2 GW DC cable from the IJmuiden Ver wind farm.
It is noted that all wind power will be converted directly into hydrogen. That is, it will not get into the power grid, which allows you to avoid additional load.
The message added that the site is located next to the Evides waterworks. A hydrogen pipeline will also be laid next to it. Thus, the produced hydrogen can be efficiently transported to consumers.
The port administration is studying the possibility of connecting Maasvlakte's hydrogen plants to regional heat networks. This will allow the use of green heat for heating houses, greenhouses and offices.
"All these factors make this place very strategic for the production of green hydrogen," the message emphasized.
Earlier, EcoPolitic wrote, that hydrogen projects located in the Rotterdam port area and exporting countries will be able to increase the supply of hydrogen to 4.6 million tons per year by 2030.
As EcoPolitic previously reported, the €800 million "Hydrogen Bank" will be launched in the EU from the fall of 2023, which is intended to partially subsidize the production of green hydrogen.
