This will help achieve the goal of reducing the cost of green hydrogen production to $1 per kilogram

The US Department of Energy has announced $750 million for 52 projects in 24 states to produce green hydrogen and electrolyzers.

The projects are expected to produce 10 GW of electrolyzers annually to produce 1.3 million tons of green hydrogen, the US Department of Energy press service reports.

It is noted that such investments will help create more than 1500 new jobs.

"Promoting clean, zero- or near-zero-emission hydrogen is a key component of U.S. President Joe Biden's plan to address the climate crisis, create good-paying jobs across the country, and strengthen America's manufacturing and industrial competitiveness," the statement said.

The press service explained that this program, together with other initiatives, will help achieve the goal of reducing the cost of green hydrogen production to $1 per kilogram.

It is noted that green hydrogen plays an important role in reducing emissions in the most energy-intensive and polluting sectors of the economy, which are key. The selected projects will contribute to the development of green hydrogen technologies in the following areas:

  • production of a low-cost high-performance electrolyzer – 8 projects for $ 316 million;
  • development of electrolyzer components and supply chains – 10 projects for $81 million;
  • advanced technologies and equipment development – 18 projects for $72 million;
  • advanced fuel cell production – 5 projects for $150 million;
  • development of the fuel cell supply chain – 10 projects for $82 million;
  • cooperation in the field of waste recovery and recycling – 1 project for $50 million.

Earlier, EcoPolitic wrote, that the US Department of Energy will allocate $47.7 million to fund 16 hydrogen research and demonstration projects.

As EcoPolitic previously reported, the US Department of Energy will allocate $425 million to finance green energy and industrial decarbonization projects in former coal regions.
