Transcarpathia began to save the Narcissus Valley from turning into a desert

The problems of the Narcissus Valley are primarily related to drainage reclamation

In Transcarpathia, they built in the Narcissus Valley another hydrotechnical structure in the canal to create a cascade of wooden locks and protect the ecosystem from droughts.

By the end of 2023 representatives the public organization "Danube-Carpathian Program" and the Carpathian Biosphere Reserve plan to build at least four such hydraulic structures, KBZ reports on Facebook.

The scientists explained that the sluice gate was installed on the main channel to the Khustets River, through which the largest amount of water is lost. The cascade will slow down this process, regulate runoff and raise the groundwater level.

"We have repeatedly written about the problems of the Narcissus Valley, which are primarily related to drainage reclamation, which was carried out here during the times of the USSR. It led to a significant decrease in the groundwater level, which negatively affected local wetland and meadow ecosystems, including daffodil populations," they said, adding that the KBZ has been trying to solve this problem for decades.

Earlier, EcoPolitic wrote, that in 2022 a project was launched to save the Narcissus Valley from droughts which were the result of climate change.

As EcoPolitic previously reported, Transcarpathia may turn into a "second Crimea". After all, the region is experiencing droughts, minimum moisture, high air temperatures and a lack of water.
