The Chernobyl reserve will be able to develop its potential as a unique international platform for scientific cooperation

The Government of Ukraine transferred 226,964.7 hectares for permanent use to the Chernobyl Radiation and Ecological Biosphere Reserve (CREBR), which will open greater opportunities for development.

Since its creation in 2016, the lands of the reserve have not been properly registered, Ruslan Strelets, head of the Ministry of Environment and Forests, reports on Facebook.

"Over the 6 years of its existence, the Chornobyl Reserve has gone from being registered as an ordinary budget institution to one of the flagships of the implementation of creative ideas and advanced technologies," the message says.

So in 2020 CREBR has been included in the World Database of Protected Areas (WDPA) and the GBIF system with the publication and updating of datasets. In addition, in 2022, the reserve received a Certificate of State Certification of a Scientific Institution.

The shooter explained that the status of a legal land user will enable the reserve to more effectively perform environmental protection tasks, in particular, in the conditions of reconstruction after military operations.

"The institution will be able to develop its potential as a unique international platform for scientific cooperation," the message noted.

Also, the activity of the "Northern Forest" state-owned enterprise, which is related to forestry, will be liquidated. The reserve will carry out exclusively nature protection measures to improve and preserve the forest complexes of the zone.

Earlier, EcoPolitic worte, that the Chernobyl Radiation and Ecological Biosphere Reserve received a state certification of a scientific institution II degree.

As EcoPolitic previously reported, in Ukraine online map of radiation background monitoring in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone and other parts of the country was created as part of the bGeigies for Ukraine project.
