Only 6% of the funds were spent on biodiversity conservation

During 2025, 797 million UAH were spent on environmental protection measures in the Chernihiv region. Nearly half of the funding was allocated to wastewater treatment.

This is according to data from the Main Office of Statistics in the Chernihiv region.

Structure of environmental expenditures

The allocation of funds by areas of environmental protection activities is as follows:

  • 46% – wastewater treatment;
  • 35% – waste management;
  • 11% – air protection and climate change mitigation;
  • 6% – biodiversity and habitat conservation;
  • 2% – other.

“In 2025, 797 million UAH were spent on environmental protection. Of this, 56 million UAH were capital investments in equipment and machinery related to cleaner technologies,” the statistics office noted.

Forest regeneration

The area of regenerated forests in the region is gradually increasing. In 2023, it was 725 ha, while during 2025 it reached 923 ha. Of these, 651 ha (71%) were restored through sowing and the planting of seedlings. The remaining forested areas regenerated naturally.

However, these volumes are several times lower than the figures for previous periods, since in 2022, 3,158 ha of forests were regenerated.

Emission dynamics

Since 2020, emissions of pollutants into the air have been gradually decreasing. At the beginning of the period, emissions totaled 20,888 t, while in 2025 this indicator amounted to 14,143 t.

The largest share fell to methane – 54%. Next were nitrogen compounds at 22% and carbon monoxide at 9%.

EcoPolitic previously analyzed environmental programs in the Chernihiv region in a separate article on the use of the environmental tax. The top expenditures in 2025 were waste management and wastewater handling measures.
