Eco-activists of the public organization "Danube-Carpathian Program" opposed the planned construction of the Svydovets ski mega-resort in Transcarpathia.
Such construction will violate 4 international environmental treaties signed by Ukraine and will destroy dozens of species of Red Book animals and plants, the DKP reports on Facebook.
Eco-activists emphasized that despite the criticism of the construction of the resort by the European Parliament, the Eighth Administrative Court of Appeal sided with the developer.
"The Tyachiv and Rakhiv RDAs continue to use taxpayers' funds to defend the business interests of the developers of Svidovets in court and hand over 1,400 hectares of the most valuable Ukrainian wildlife for development for free," they wrote.
The material said that the trials in this case have been ongoing since 2017. A mega-resort, three times larger than Bukovel, is planned to be built on Svidovka, with 60 hotels, 120 restaurants and even its own airport. It is planned to lay 230 kilometers of ski tracks and receive 28,000 tourists per day.
The authors emphasized that the construction will lead to the complete loss and reduction of 30% of the populations of about 170 Red Book animal species, as well as 90% of the populations of 122 identified Red Book plant species
They noted that shrews, brown bears, lynxes, forest cats, and invertebrates will be most affected. tadpoles, barbel beetles, etc. Among the red book plants, it suffers the most damage aconite, sundew, fat woman and others.
The message also emphasized that all rare plant communities and habitat types will be fragmented or destroyed, resulting in the loss of a large number of highland wetland communities and habitats. Also, the construction of the resort will destroy the migration corridors of species, especially large carnivores, and more than 400 hectares of virgin and quasi-virgin forests.
The authors emphasized that the construction of the resort is also dangerous for the lives of tourists. After all, 7 avalanche-hazardous areas have been identified on the territory, more than 10 watercourses on which mudflow processes have been recorded, and more than 30 watercourses with vectors of potential mudslide danger.
"With the full functioning of the planned resort (selection of the appropriate volume of water resources), the problem of water supply for the local population downstream of the Tisza will arise," they added.
The authors emphasized that the construction will violate 4 international environmental treaties signed by Ukraine, namely:
- the Berne Convention on the Protection of Wild Flora and Fauna and Natural Habitats;
- Framework Convention on the Protection and Sustainable Development of the Carpathians (Carpathian Convention);
- Convention on environmental impact assessment in a transboundary context;
- Convention on the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes.
"The monopolization of natural resources in the same hands (as in the case of "Bukovel", "Skorzonera", Kolomoiskyi) leads to the support of the socio-ecological crisis in the region and corruption schemes", wrote eco-activists.
They noted that the public has already prepared an alternative EIA, based on long-term field research during 2019-2021.
Earlier, EcoPolitic wrote, that in Transcarpathia, eco-activists demand from the authorities to cancel the transfer of the Vilshansky Reservoir on the Tereblya River, which is also called the Transcarpathian Sea, into private property for hotel activities.
