Throughout 2025, Europeans purchased 1.89 million new electric passenger cars. These figures show that the number of electric car registrations rose by 29.7 per cent.
This has been reported by Eurostat.
The statistics confirm a growing interest in electric transport, particularly when compared with the previous year – 2024. In that year, by contrast, the figures showed an annual decline, falling by 6 per cent.
In total, 7.59 million battery-powered electric passenger cars were registered in the EU by the end of 2025. In 2024, the figure was 31.5 per cent lower, at 5.77 million units.

Trends in other transport segments
New registrations of plug-in hybrid vehicles in 2025 also set a record – 1.03 million, representing a 34.2 per cent increase compared with the previous year.
The plug-in hybrid segment saw the highest number of new registrations – 3.62 million. However, in percentage terms, the increase was relatively modest, at 13.4 per cent.
The number of new cars powered exclusively by internal combustion engines continues to decline. Registrations of diesel cars fell by 22 per cent to 1.07 million units, whilst petrol car registrations fell by 18.4 per cent to 2.98 million units.

EcoPolitic previously reported that in the second quarter of this year, sales of electric vehicles broke records in 50 countries around the world. Experts attribute this primarily to the fuel crisis caused by the war in the Middle East.
Meanwhile, in Ukraine, imports of new electric vehicles account for the smallest segment of the electric car market. Following the reinstatement of VAT refunds after customs clearance, the main driver has been the resale of second-hand cars within the country.
