The reform of the waste management sector is now one of the priority directions for the Ministry of Environment

Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion of Russia in Ukraine, more than 670,000 tons of destruction waste have already been generated from the debris of buildings and infrastructure.

The Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources, together with the Ministry of Community Development, Territories and Infrastructure, is working on the management of demolition waste and projects for their processing, the Ministry of Environment reports on Facebook.

Director of the Department of Digital Transformation, Electronic Public Services and Waste Management of the Ministry of Environment, Yevgenia Popovych emphasized the importance of waste management reform for post-war reconstruction and recovery.

According to her, the reform of the waste management industry is now one of the priorities of the Ministry of Environment.

"We have developed an information system for waste management and are fruitfully cooperating with the Ministry of Infrastructure precisely in the field of waste management of destruction. Currently, there are already many projects on their processing. Such waste is mainly used for filling roads," said Popovych.

The report emphasized that the debris of destroyed buildings cause irreparable damage to the environment, because they pollute water, soil, and air. The largest amount of demolition waste was recorded in the following areas:

  • Kyivska;
  • Khersonskaya;
  • Kharkivska;
  • Mykolayivska;
  • Donetsk;
  • Zaporozhye.

It is noted that in order to effectively manage such waste and reduce its impact on the environment and people, the necessary regulatory and legal acts have already been developed. Such waste can be used to rebuild communities and roads.

Earlier, EcoPolitic wrote, that in September 2022, the Cabinet of Ministers approved the "Procedure for the management of waste from the destruction of buildings and structures" resulting from damage caused by hostilities, acts of terrorism, sabotage or liquidation of their consequences.

As EcoPolitic previously reported, the international company Miyamoto International will help build a modern waste management system in the Kyiv region and establish the processing of demolition waste, that is, buildings destroyed by the occupiers.
