Zhytomyr to launch a bio-thermal power plant using fuel from waste

The city plans to annually replace 20 million m3 of natural gas with RDF raw materials

In Zhytomyr, half of the capacities of one of the 40 MW bio-thermal power plant, which was supposed to run entirely on wood chips, will be converted to fuel from RDF waste from the local waste processing plant.

Deputy Mayor of Zhytomyr Serhii Kondratyuk told about this, reports Energy reform.

"We managed to convince the investors of this thermal power plant to work on RDF as well. We assumed that there is already a waste processing plant built in Zhytomyr, which in any case will produce RDF and transport it for sale. Why sell it far away if we can we use it locally?" Kondratyuk explained.

He noted that the project capacity provides for 10 MW of electricity. However, it is currently unknown when the waste processing plant will be able to produce the required volumes of RDF.

"During the test operation, it became clear that it cannot provide the parameters that were declared during the design: 85% recycling and 15% return to the landfill. Therefore, additional equipment will be purchased to enter the parameters. Currently, almost 35% of "tails remain" Kondratiuk said.

According to him, the most likely reason for the deviations is the morphological composition of the garbage, most of which is organic waste. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate this morphological composition and improve the processing parameters.

It is noted that the volume of RDF raw materials from the plant will allow replacing 20 million m3 of natural gas per year.

Earlier, EcoPolitic wrote, that in February in Zhytomyr the first stage of a waste processing plant was put into operation, where the depth of processing reaches 40-45%. This is the first waste processing plant in Ukraine built with the money of private investors.

As EcoPolitic previously reported, in Poltava they plan to implement the project of ecological and energy processing of garbage, which involves burning 150-200 thousand tons of solid household waste per year for the production of heat and electricity.
