On Tuesday, November 15, during the Climate Summit COP27, the Ukrainian Climate Office was launched, which will be financed by the European Union and Germany.
The project is designed to provide real assistance to Ukraine in the implementation of climate goals on the way to decarbonization, reports informs Ministry of Environment on Telegram.
The message noted that the climate office will function within the framework of the BMWK/EU international technical assistance project "Building capacity for climate action".
The Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine, Ruslan Strilets, explained that the Office will provide support to the Government of Ukraine, cities and regions, as well as enterprises and businesses to implement elements of the climate policy. The project will be co-financed by the European Union and the International Climate Initiative (ICI) of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection (BMWK).
"Ukraine has not for one day abandoned its obligations to the world community, in particular regarding climate policy. As before the full-scale invasion, Ukraine seeks to contribute to the implementation of the European Green Deal. We aim to achieve climate neutrality, although now we will have to make even more efforts to achieve this. However, we have not abandoned our intention to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 65% by 2030. We have transformed our climate ambitions into concrete goals and written them down in the Recovery Plan of Ukraine, which was presented in Lugano in July 2022," he emphasized.
Strliets also added that the creation of a climate office is an excellent example of Ukraine's support from international partners.
"I invite all countries that want to contribute to overcoming global warming to cooperate within the framework of this initiative," he said.
The climate office will help Ukraine with:
- decarbonization of economic sectors;
- development of governance in adaptation;
- expanding opportunities for youth and regions on the way to the Green course of the EU;
- implementation of the provisions of the Paris Agreement.
"One of the priority directions of the Office's activity will be the development and support of special approaches to climate financing for Ukraine," the message emphasized.
The authors also emphasized that Russian military aggression caused about 33 million tons of carbon emissions, the largest part of which (more than 23 million tons of CO2) fell on fires. About 80% fires occur in territories where hostilities were or are being conducted.
The message also noted that according to preliminary estimates, post-war reconstruction will create about 49 million tons of emissions.
As EcoPolitic previously reported, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi during his speech at COP27 said that there can be no effective climate policy without peace, after all, nations seek to protect themselves from existing threats created, in particular, by the aggression of the Russian Federation.
