In Odesa, employees of the national park Tuzlivski lymani found 300 dead birds, including 5 thin-billed martins and 295 common martin gulls in the Burnas and Solony estuaries.
The reason for the death of the birds could be the chemical pollution of the Burnas estuary with heavy metals and other poisonous substances after the bombing by the Russian troops at the beginning of the full-scale invasion, writes biologist Ivan Rusev of the Tuzlivski lymany NPP on Facebook.
He said that for two days, local residents reported the dead birds at the estuary, which was confirmed by the national park commission together with veterinarians.
"A detailed survey of the territory and water areas showed that the dead birds are only in the area of these two estuaries, not far from the powerful transmission line," said Rusev.
No dead birds were found in other territories or water areas of estuaries. However, in the evenings, dead animals are picked up by predators.
Scientists found that 10% of the birds were young.
Rusev named 4 versions of the plague:
- epizootic infectious disease;
- chemical poison in farm fields where martins sometimes feed;
- collision with a powerful power line, but there are no obvious external signs of electric shock;
- chemical pollution of the water area of the Burnas estuary as a result of Russian aggression.
"After the research is completed, we will definitely inform," he added.
Earlier, EcoPolitic wrote, that in Odesa in the national natural park Tuzlivski lymani unique small protected lakes have dried up.
As EcoPolitic previously reported, scientists of the Tuzlivski Lymani National Nature Park in Odesa calculated that during the period of the full-scale war in the Black Sea at least 5,000 dolphins died.
