Scientists have paid special attention to the loss of strength of pipelines

Transportation of hydrogen through the gas transportation system of Ukraine can lead to loss of strength of pipelines.

This was stated during a professional discussion on the transportation and storage of hydrogen in Ukraine, initiated by the State Agency for Energy Efficiency and the Energy Club.

"Scientists spoke about the experimental studies of the possibilities of using modern gas infrastructure for hydrogen transportation and their results. They paid special attention to the loss of strength of pipelines during hydrogen transportation," the press service of the State Agency for Energy Efficiency said.

The participants of the discussion agreed that further study of this issue is needed for joint efforts, especially of scientists, and development of steps for the development of this new field.

"One of the advantages of Ukraine in the development of hydrogen energy is constantly mentioned the wide gas transmission system and the availability of gas storage facilities. However, the issue of their use for transportation and storage of hydrogen must be worked out in detail," said Valery Bezus.

Representatives of Naftogaz Ukrainy, Ukrtransgaz, the GTS Operator of Ukraine, the Gas Institute, and the Institute of Electric Welding agreed with the need to study these issues. E.O. Paton, Institute of Physics and Mechanics. G.V. Karpenko National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and the Union of Chemists of Ukraine.

At the same time, a representative of Naftogaz Ukrainy announced the company's intentions to become the largest producer of hydrogen in Ukraine. According to him, last year Naftogaz did a lot to implement these plans.

"Naftogaz has ambitions to become the largest producer of hydrogen in Ukraine. Last year we had a lot of work related to the development of the hydrogen economy. In the world this direction remains promising: high gas prices in the world stimulate the development of hydrogen projects," - Oleksiy Ryabchyn, Adviser to the Chairman of the Board of NJSC Naftogaz of Ukraine on the Development of Low-Carbon Businesses and the EU Green Course.

The GTS operator also takes into account the issue of hydrogen transportation in its own strategy.

"We are preparing to systematically investigate the possibility of using our assets to transport a mixture of hydrogen and gas and pure hydrogen in general," said Mykola Kadensky, head of the OGTSU network development department. He is also convinced that the approach of industrial clusters should be used to develop this area.

Ukrtransgaz has also stated that it is studying ways to store hydrogen: the use of existing gas storage facilities or the construction of new infrastructure. There is great potential for this, as Ukraine has gas storage facilities, which rank third in the world in terms of volume.

"In addition, we must analyze industrial safety, the necessary regulatory framework, the geography of logistics corridors, the impact of hydrogen on the physical condition of storage facilities," - added the head of the technical department of JSC "Ukrtransgaz" Roman Malutin.

We will remind that the largest hydrogenerating company of Ukraine of PJSC Ukrhydroenergo declared that studies technological possibilities for generation of "green" hydrogen at the Dnieper HPP.
