The year 2022 was supposed to be the beginning of the active development of the climate direction

In Ukraine, the chain of Auchan supermarkets and hypermarkets, despite the war, continues to adhere to the strategy of sustainable development and works to reduce food waste, plastic and carbon emissions.

Zlata Kostiuk, a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) specialist at Auchan Ukraine, told about this, reports European Business Association.

The company has identified the Climate block as a priority for 2022 and is currently looking for a manager of environmental projects.

"Sustainable development has officially become part of Auchan Retail's strategy at the international level since mid-2021. And in the strategy of the Ukrainian enterprise, CSR has become an end-to-end lever, which we plan to integrate into all priority areas in the future," Kostyuk said.

This will apply to:

  • reducing plastic packaging and increasing ecological ingredients;
  • responsibilities of physical and logistical areas - for example, reducing carbon emissions.

She also explained that Auchan food products should be associated with responsible production.

"Also, the company validated the road climate map, and the year 2022 was supposed to be the beginning of the active development of this direction. Of course, the war made its adjustments, but now we are even more convinced that sustainable development has not lost its relevance," Kostiuk said.

She also added that it is necessary to decide as reactively as possible how to reduce the negative impact on the planet and help suppliers and customers in this.

"All market participants must clearly decide how exactly we will save our planet," the specialist emphasized.

Also, Auchan plans to present a report on sustainable development for 2021 in September.

"Such reporting expands the understanding of the company's non-financial activities, adds transparency and helps build closer relationships with all stakeholders, demonstrating the company's responsibility," Kostiuk explained.

As EcoPolitic reported before, in Ukraine, the Office for Issues launched implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals.
