A systemic approach is needed to form a biomethane economy

In Ukraine, in 2022, a legislative basis was created for the development of biomethane production, which is a promising alternative to natural gas.

The development potential of this sector should be used to solve environmental problems, waste accumulation, sustainable development of communities and overcome energy challenges, the press service of the State Agency for Energy Efficiency and Energy Saving reports on Facebook.

It is noted that in 2022, attention to biomethane has increased both in Ukraine and in the EU.

The message emphasized that the "first brick" in the legislative foundation for the biomethane market was Law No. 1820-IX "On the development of biomethane production", which was adopted in October 2021.

Achievements in 2022:

  • The Government approved the operating procedure of register of biomethane;
  • the development and implementation of the register of guarantees of origin of biomethane has begun;
  • The National Commission for the Regulation of Energy and Communal Services (NEURC) made changes to the Code of the Gas Transportation System and the Code of Gas Distribution Systems, which allows supply biomethane to the network. For this, the molar fraction of oxygen content in natural gas has been increased.

"Given the situation of gas prices and resource potential, biomethane production projects are investment-attractive. According to various estimates, the full cost of commercial biomethane, taking into account the type of raw material for biogas production, the capacity of the installation and the cost of logistics to the final consumer, can vary from 300 to 1,200 euros/1,000 m3," the message said.

Head of the State Energy Efficiency Agency Valery Bezus emphasized that Ukraine has the necessary resource potential for biomethane production. Probably, at first it will be more about millions of cubic meters of biomethane in real projects. This will make it possible to assess the further possibilities of biomethane production and supply. In addition, close cooperation between Ukraine and the EU in the field of renewable gases, in particular biomethane, is planned.

"The priority should be a systematic approach to the formation of a biomethane economy in Ukraine, taking into account the possibilities of using not only agricultural waste, but also all types of resources for biomethane, as well as ways to create energy clusters. In the future, biomethane has a chance to become a means of ensuring energy independence, sustainable development of communities, decarbonization and increasing the competitiveness of industry on the European market," he said.

The press service added that in 2022, the State Energy Efficiency Agency also developed international cooperation.

As EcoPolitic before, a report by the European Biogas Association showed that biomethane and biogas are becoming increasingly important sources of energy in the EU's energy mix, and their production will increase over the decade.
