In Ukraine, in the 4 months since the start of the full-scale invasion, russian troops have caused land and air damage in the amount of almost 254.3 billion hryvnias, according to the calculations of the Operational Headquarters.

The greatest damage was caused to the soil in Lviv region and Kharkiv region, the State Inspectorate reports on Facebook.

Since February 24, enemy missiles have been causing fires, releasing tons of harmful substances into the air, littering the ground with debris from missiles, equipment, and crushed objects.

The Operational Headquarters maintains a register of ecocrimes of the aggressor country and calculations of the amount of damage caused to the environment.

The greatest damage during the four months of the full-scale invasion was inflicted on:

  • land and soil for the total amount of almost 80.5 billion hryvnias;
  • atmospheric air for the total amount of more than 173.8 billion hryvnias.

Thus, in Luhansk oblast alone, as a result of military actions and as a result of the unorganized emission of pollutants into the atmospheric air, which occurred as a result of burning, the environment was damaged in the amount of more than 98.7 billion hryvnias.

"The greatest damage to land and soil was caused in Lviv Oblast and Kharkiv oblast, amounting to 33.2 billion hryvnias and 22.2 billion hryvnias, respectively," the article says.

Calculations were carried out in accordance with specially created methods for calculating damage to the natural environment, which were developed by the Operational Headquarters of the State Environmental Inspection, namely:

  • calculation of unorganized emissions of polluting substances or a mixture of such substances into the atmospheric air as a result of emergency situations and/or during martial law and determining the amount of damage caused", approved by the Order of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine dated 04.13.2022 No. 175, registered in the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine on April 16, 2022 under No. 433/37769.
  • determination of the amount of damage caused to land and soil as a result of emergency situations and/or armed aggression and hostilities during martial law", approved by the order of the Ministry of Environment Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine dated April 4, 2022 No. 167.

Earlier, EcoPolitic wrote, that eco-activists called on Ukrainians who dismantle destroyed houses to use special clothes, a mask and glasses to protect against asbestos.

As EcoPolitic previously reported, The European Union is ready to provide Ukraine expert and practical help in the assessment of the damage caused, in the process of post-war reconstruction and restoration of the environment.
