The development of biomethane production is one of the ways of replacing gas and decarbonization

On Tuesday, August 2, the National Commission for State Regulation in the Energy and Utilities Sectors (NCSREUS) adopted a resolution about amendments to the code of the gas transportation system and the code of gas distribution systems.

This will make it possible to supply biomethane to the network, says the press release of the State Energy Efficiency Agency.

The resolution provides for an increase in the molar fraction of oxygen content in natural gas from 0.02 mol. %:

  • up to 0.2 mol. % for access of biomethane to the gas transportation system;
  • up to 1.0 mol. % for access of biomethane to gas distribution systems.

Therefore, biomethane producers will be able to apply to the operators of the GTS and GRS for technical conditions regarding the supply of biomethane to the network.

Also, on July 22, the Government approved the Procedure for the functioning of the biomethane register.

"Thus, at the state level, the efforts of all – the Parliament, the Government, the Ministry of Energy, the State Energy Efficiency Agency, the National Energy Regulatory Commission – have been accumulated for the introduction of the biomethane market in Ukraine," the article says.

The State Energy Efficiency Agency emphasized that the development of biomethane production is one of the ways of replacing gas and decarbonization, which Ukraine is actively pursuing together with the EU in the context of the global energy crisis and russia's energy terror.

Earlier, EcoPolitic wrote, that Ukraine, even during the war, has a significant interest in the development of the biomethane market, because it contributes to energy independence, because it reduces the need for natural gas.

As EcoPolitic previously reported, in Ukraine the government adopted a draft resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers about the Procedure for the operation of the biomethane register, which will allow to launch a biomethane market.
