The plague began in September 2022

Thousands of mammals and birds died in Odesa, including more than 1,000 pheasants, hundreds of gray crows, rooks, badgers, foxes, jackals, etc.

Biologist and ecologist of the National Nature Park " Tuzlivski lymany" Ivan Rusev suggested on Facebook that the cause of such an ecological disaster was the free issuance of permits for agrochemicals by the State Service for Food Safety and Consumer Protection, as well as unprofessional work of law enforcement officers.

"Amid the incredible test of the nation, we are still receiving terrible consequences for wildlife from the activities of agrarians," Rusev said.

He explained that the beginning of the plague happened in September 2022. Many hunters saw the mass death of animals, but they were only indignant and did not contact the police.

"Such a mass death of wild animals will have a negative impact on the state of populations of many species of birds and mammals and, in general, on the life of wildlife," the biologist warned.

Rusev emphasized that in the spring of 2022 there was also a plague of pigeons, rooks, wolves and other animals. However, the culprits were never brought to justice.

"While investigative bodies are collecting evidence and interrogating farmers as part of criminal proceedings, which were recently opened on the fact of the mass death of birds in the national park. But from my experience and from the fact that I now see how they are "operationally working", I think that they do not seek to bring this case to court, unfortunately," he added.

Earleir, EcoPolitic wrote, that in the Odesa region, in the National Natural Park "Tuzlivski Lymani" they found about 100 dead birds, who have been poisoned by a substance similar to rodenticide (poison for rodents). The Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources asked the Prosecutor General's Office to register criminal proceedings under the article of ecocide and to start a pre-trial investigation into the mass death of birds.

As EcoPolitic reported earlier, in the Odesa region, only in the last six months, the workers of the national nature park "Tuzlovsky lymani" discovered eight locations where rooks died with a total number of approximately 500 birds.
