This will give a significant boost in the joint movement to develop sustainable energy, ensure energy security and decarbonize the economy

Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal and President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen signed a memorandum on strategic partnership in the field of renewable gases, namely hydrogen and biomethane.

Ukraine and the EU will jointly develop the spheres of production, trade, transportation, storage and use of such gases, the State Agency for Energy Efficiency and Energy Saving reports on Facebook.

It is noted that the memorandum was signed during a joint meeting of the Government of Ukraine and the European Commission, as well as following the results of von der Leyen's meeting with the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky.

The press service said that the memorandum provides for:

  • exchange of information and assessments of scenarios and forecasts regarding the demand for renewable gases;
  • development of the regulatory field;
  • harmonization of certification documents in accordance with EU requirements;
  • identification and elimination of barriers;
  • infrastructure development;
  • mobilization of financial and investment instruments;
  • development of energy clusters in Ukraine.

"The launch of a partnership with the EU in the field of renewable gases is a significant event that will give a significant impetus to our joint movement towards the development of sustainable energy, ensuring energy security and decarbonization of the economy," said Valery Bezus, head of the State Energy Efficiency Agency.

It is noted that the directions of partnership in the issues of biomethane and hydrogen were recently discussed at a series of meetings between the President of Ukraine, the Prime Minister, the Minister of Energy and the head of the State Energy Efficiency Agency with the Vice President of the European Commission for the European Green Agreement, Frans Timmermans, in January 2023.

"Ahead of us is long and active work on the implementation of all the provisions of the memorandum, which the State Energy Efficiency Agency is already working on," the press service emphasized.

The authors emphasized that the establishment of cooperation on green hydrogen and biomethane was preceded by long and fruitful work, in which the State Energy Efficiency Agency also took part. The register of guarantees of origin of biomethane, the project of the Hydrogen Strategy of Ukraine has already been developed, and promising ways of their circulation in the EU are being worked out in cooperation with international partners.

Earlier, EcoPolitic wrote, that the State Agency for Energy Efficiency and Energy Saving, despite the martial law, completed the development of the register of guarantees of origin of biomethane.

As EcoPolitic previously reported, CEO of DTEK Maksym Timchenko stated that Ukraine plans to achieve 30 GW of renewable energy by 2030, which will make up 50% of the RES share in the energy mix, and to export 15 GW of "green" hydrogen and electricity to the EU.
