The likely source of the unpleasant smell may be illegal gas stations

In Rivne, the city council created a working group that will study every case of unpleasant odors and look for their causes, which the townspeople have been complaining about for several years.

The smell periodically appears in various microdistricts of the city, which is associated with unauthorized emissions and local pollution, reports Rivnenski Novyni.

It is noted that local self-government bodies do not have the right to organize air quality inspections at enterprises.

The State Service of Ukraine for Food Safety and Consumer Protection (Dzhprodspozhivsluzhva) emphasized that they have repeatedly responded to complaints about unpleasant odors. Specialists went to commission inspections on Fabrychniy, Budivelniki, Knyaz Volodymyr, Danylo Halytskyi streets. However, no source of the smell was found. Representatives of the Department of Ecology also went to places where residents most often smelled an unpleasant smell.

The material said that some townspeople consider one of the subdivisions of "Rivneoblvodokanal" to be the source of pollution. However, the enterprise does not work after 5 p.m., and the unpleasant smell spreads after 7 p.m.

"This issue has been arising for several years. The problem is complex and difficult, but it is possible to single out objects that cause local pollution. In particular, part of the smell, in my opinion, comes from the enterprise from Shpanov [villages near Rivne – ed]," said Roman Safonov, head of the Rivne Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

He added that the possible cause of the smell could be illegal gas stations, which should be controlled by the police.

"Since inspections are prohibited today, the working group must do everything to make sure whether a specific enterprise is the cause of the unpleasant smell," said Viktor Shakirzyan, secretary of the city council. "The city should be clean and not have any unpleasant smell."

As EcoPolitic reported earlier, in Zaporizhzhia, in the industrial zone of the Shevchenkiv district, an entrepreneur installed a homemade furnace in which he remelts batteries. Such activity produces black smoke with a very unpleasant smell.
