EcoPolitic has collected 7 most significant cases of environmental damage that were made public during the week of November 9-15. We used the information posted by the press services of prosecutor's offices, as well as units of the State Environmental Inspectorate of Ukraine.

  1. The State Environmental Inspectorate (SEI) of the Capital District issued a claim to SCP “Kyiv Crematorium” for over UAH 122 million for excess emissions into the atmosphere. The inspectors noted that the enterprise exceeded the permitted norms and did not properly implement the planned measures to reduce pollutant emissions.

2. In Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast, the Carpathian District SEI discovered illegal cutting of trees on the territory of Kosmatsky lesnichestvo of the branch “Kut Forestry” and issued a claim to the leskhoz for over UAH 83 million. Interestingly, in response, the State Enterprise “Forests of Ukraine” publicly accused the environmental inspectors of bias in the results of this inspection.

  1. The organized criminal group, consisting of the initiator and 5 of his accomplices, under the guise of providing services for waste removal and disposal in 2021-2024, created three illegal hazardous waste dumps in Kyivshchyna: in the village of Zazimye, in Bila Tserkva (Hajek microdistrict) and in the village of Shkarovka, Bila Tserkva district. Their total area amounted to more than 7000 square meters. m. By their actions, the perpetrators caused damage to the environment in the amount of over UAH 9.3 million. Investigators of the Specialized Environmental Prosecutor's Office informed them of suspicion.
  2. Eco-inspectors of the Specialized Ecological Prosecutor's Office of Pridneprovsky District found mass destruction of trees on the territory of the Regional Landscape Park “Svetlovodsky” in Oleksandrivskyi district of Kirovograd region. Attackers cut down 114 trees and destroyed 18 more with heavy machinery. The total amount of damage amounted to more than 3 million UAH.
  3. Vinnytsia regional prosecutor's office reported about the court verdict of Ilyinetskyi district court to three “black loggers”. They organized a criminal group and were engaged in illegal logging, transportation and sale of timber on the territory of Dashevska community of Vinnytsia region. The convicts received 5 years of imprisonment each with a probation period, on condition that they compensate the damage caused by them in the amount of 1.6 million UAH for 2 years. The court also supported the proposal of the prosecutor's office to confiscate from the convicts in favor of the Armed Forces of Ukraine a truck, tools for cutting trees and 19 warehouses of oak trees.

  5. In the Carpathian region, at the request of prosecutors of the Kosovo District Prosecutor's Office, the court seized a land plot worth 970 thousand UAH , which belongs to a local council member. He is suspected of polluting land in the village of Verkhovyna. EcoPolitics previously reported that local residents have complained repeatedly to the stench from the territory of a utility company, where his boss, a member of the local council, set up a dump and sorting of waste. According to environmental inspectors, it created a danger to the environment and caused damage to the environment amounting to more than half a million hryvnia .

  6. Environmental inspectors of the SEI of the Capital District discovered unauthorized dump of household and construction waste with an area of over 4 hectares in the city of Bucha on Promyshlennaya Street. Members of the NGO "Bureau for Combating Environmental Crimes" reported this violation to them.
