The most important stage of the program will be the development of scenarios for the transition to green energy

The Rivne community received a grant of € 973 thousand, thanks to which it should achieve zero emissions in the energy sector.

The city became a participant in the NetZeroCities Pilot Cities Program with the financial support of the EU, reports Rivne District.

It is noted that Budapest, Istanbul and 22 other communities have also become participating cities of the program. The project is aimed at adaptation to climate change and rapid decarbonization at the local level.

In the material, it was said that within the framework of the program, Rivne has:

  • create an energy passport of the community;
  • develop scenarios for the transition to zero CO2 emissions by 2050;
  • to organize and popularize energy efficiency among students, heads of condominiums, heads of farms, and a wide range of interested parties.

The article emphasized that Rivne plans to reduce emissions by increasing the energy efficiency of buildings. This will help to save on heating at the level of the city and residents.

"This project will have three parts. The first part will relate to the development of a strategy for the transition to zero emissions. We fully understand that it will be difficult for us to strive for zero, but we set ourselves such a goal. The second part will relate to the training of heads of condominiums, energy managers, communal institutions and students on the basis of the university. And the third part of the project is that we will install automation on communal institutions, which will allow us to obtain heat energy indicators for a specific period of time," he said head of the energy management department of the economic development department of the Rivne City Council Andriy Girol.

He explained that on on the basis of such studies, an energy passport of the community will be created, which provides for:

  • collection of data on consumption and generation of energy resources in the community;
  • analysis of data on their impact on the state of the environment;
  • building models for forecasting scenarios of the transition to renewable energy sources.

It is noted that the passport of the community should be developed with different levels of access, namely for interested residents, for officials, for experts and for energy management specialists.

The material emphasized that new educational programs are planned to be created on the basis of the National University of Water Management and Nature Management in the field of energy efficiency and reduction of CO2 emissions for the training of specialists, as well as the creation of educational laboratories at the university.

The developers explained that the most important stage of the program will be the development of transition scenarios. After all, it is necessary to analyze the possibilities of the region in the use of renewable energy sources and search for the most effective solutions. Based on this, transition scenarios for businesses and ordinary consumers will be formed.

"It is important that the decarbonization policy becomes an end-to-end policy for the city. Only then can we talk about climate neutrality as a goal. Despite this, today Rivne has every chance to become a center of innovation and an important experiment in the fight against climate change," the article says.

It is noted that both specialists and ordinary consumers can contribute to the development of the city's energy efficiency strategy. To do this, you need to fill out the registration form and choose the format of involvement.

Earlier, EcoPolitic wrote, that 11 hectares of energy willow were planted in the Rivne region.

As EcoPolitic previously reported, Zhytomyr plans to become the first climate-neutral city of Ukraine by 2050 and has already reduced carbon emissions by more than 40%, exceeding the 2022 goal of 30%.
