Poland has begun accepting applications for co-financing of high-efficiency cogeneration projects using renewable energy sources. The implementation of clean energy measures and energy storage will be financed by the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management (NFOŚiGW) in cooperation with the FEnIKS Program (European Funds for Infrastructure, Climate, and Environment 2021-2027).
According to the Polish government, applications for the competition will be accepted until March 10, 2026. The total budget of the program is PLN 627 million (over €140 million).
"We offer a financial instrument that provides up to 100 percent of investment financing. This makes it possible to build efficient biogas plants using renewable energy sources, develop energy storage, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions," said Józef Matysiak, Vice President of the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management.
What projects are eligible for funding?
- Additional generation. Construction of new or expansion of existing generating units. Their capacity must exceed 50 kW. It is mandatory that the technical design be highly efficient, provide cogeneration of thermal and electrical energy, and use RES. Biogas, biomethane, or biomass-excluding forest wood-must be used as the energy source.
- Energy storage. The construction of facilities for accumulating generated energy can also receive investment support. This is an optional, but not mandatory, component of the project.
EcoPolitic reported that the European Union is investing nearly €3 billion in 61 zero-emission projects.
In addition, five projects for the production of batteries for electric cars won a competition held by the Innovation Fund. The EU is investing €643 million in these projects.
