Ukraine can become a member of the climate club of the European Union

The German government will increase the total budget of technical assistance projects to be implemented in Ukraine within the framework of the International Climate Initiative to €44.5 million.

The projects are aimed at the development of climate policy, biodiversity protection and green restoration, the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources reports on Facebook.

The message emphasized that funding will be directed both to new projects and to those that were suspended due to a full-scale invasion and reformatted for new realities.

The press service emphasized that German projects of international technical assistance will cover:

  • support of Ukraine in the implementation of the Paris Agreement;
  • adaptation to the consequences of climate change in the Black Sea region;
  • creation of a trading system for emissions quotas;
  • implementation of the best available technologies and management methods (BTM);
  • formation of a policy of low emissions;
  • preservation of the ancient forests of the Carpathians;
  • increasing Ukraine's ability to overcome the consequences of the war and integrate into the EU.

It is noted that at the bilateral meeting of the Ukrainian delegation with the representatives of the German government, in addition to such initiatives, the inclusion of Ukraine in the climate club, which is currently formed by the countries of the European Union, was discussed.

The press service emphasized that the German government is also ready to help Ukraine with the construction of rehabilitation centers for animals affected by the war and the creation of eco-education centers, similar to European ones. Such rehabilitation centers and infrastructure are already foreseen in the post-war recovery plan of Ukraine.

The meeting also discussed the recovery plan, urgent problems of Ukraine, the damage caused to the environment as a result of the war and existing risks.

"In such a difficult time as today, we have not stopped our work in any environmental policy. On the contrary, they strengthened it, in particular, regarding the reform of the environmental monitoring system. It is important for us to collect all the information about our ecosystems and their changes," said Victoria Kireeva, director of the Department of Industrial Pollution Prevention and Climate Policy of the Ministry of the Environment.

According to Oleksandr Krasnolutskyi, Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources, Ukraine strives to apply the best practices currently available in Europe for its reconstruction and development. And that is why Germany's experience and institutional assistance are extremely important.

Earlier, EcoPolitic wrote, that the Global Environment Facility (GEF) secretariat will consider the possibility of cooperation with Ukraine in the field of post-war environmental restoration, water policy, chemical safety and air pollution.

As EcoPolitic previously reported, Switzerland launched a new international technical assistance project "Cohesion and Regional Development of Ukraine" (UCORD) in Ukraine, which will contribute to the recovery of the country on the basis of sustainable development and circular economy.
