In Zakarpattia, in the Uzhan National Nature Park, a red bison was caught in the lens of a camera trap, scientists also recorded a female with cubs in another area.
These animals disappeared from the Ukrainian fauna even before the beginning of the 18th century, the Uzhan National Nature Park reports on Facebook.
"A female with a calf was recorded in the same area, and a male - 20 km away," said Vlad Kamentsa, a biologist at the national park, in the comments to the report.
The message explained that the reason for the disappearance of bison was excessive hunting.
It is listed in all editions of the Red Book of Ukraine and has the status of "disappeared in nature". In the Red List of the International Union for Conservation of Nature and the Red Book of the Carpathians, the bison is classified as "vulnerable" (VU).
However, animals began to be restored in the 60s of the 20th century. Currently, free-living bison populations are present in Belarus, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia and Ukraine.
"The representative of the hollow-horned Bovidae bison, Bison bonasus, historically lived in the Uzhan Valley, and now individual individuals periodically enter the territory of the park from Poland and Slovakia, where the bison reacclimatization program is being implemented," the report said.
As EcoPolitic reported before, in the Uzhan National Nature Park in Transcarpathia, employees mowed a tract a red book late bloom cell.
