In Sumy, 13 out of 43 discovered spontaneous landfills were removed during the year

In Sumy region, environmental inspectors found 86 landfills covering 49,556 m2 in 2023 and managed to eliminate 20 of them.

The area of the cleaned-up dumps reaches 25,681 m2, the State Environmental Inspectorate in Sumy Oblast reports on Facebook.

It is noted that the landfills were discovered during inspections and through appeals from concerned citizens. The largest number of them were found on the territory:

  • Sum – 43 (13 removed);
  • Shostka urban territorial community – 12;
  • Gamalivka village of Shostkinsky district – 5 (1 was removed).

"Some of the natural garbage dumps discovered were removed immediately after they were discovered. However, the Inspectorate also had to send official demands to the addresses of the heads of territorial communities regarding the liquidation of landfills," the press service said.

The message emphasized that according to Law No. 280/97-BP "On Local Self-Government in Ukraine", local authorities have the following powers:

  • organization of management of household waste, construction and demolition waste;
  • organization of improvement of settlements, development and implementation of local waste management plans;
  • introducing separate collection of household waste and ensuring the fulfillment of targets for preparation for reuse and recycling of household waste;
  • ensuring the liquidation of unauthorized landfills within settlements.

The State Inspectorate added that the laws of Ukraine also provide that local self-government bodies must ensure the liquidation of unauthorized landfills within settlements. And local councils are responsible for the state of the natural environment in their territory.

Earlier, EcoPolitic wrote, that in August near Sumy along the road, eco-inspectors discovered 12 natural garbage dumps one and a half meters high containing large volumes of household, repair, construction and industrial waste.

As EcoPolitic previously reported, in 2024, the Kobelyat community in Poltava region plans to liquidate and recultivate a spontaneous landfill in the Kremenchutsk forest farm with an area of 1.3 hectares.
