EU energy ministers have agreed on laws on energy conservation and the promotion of renewable energy sources (RES).
This was announced on Monday, June 27, by the publication Reuters.
Officials supported targets of 40% of electricity from RES by 2030 (compared to 22% in 2020) and a 9% reduction in energy consumption against projected levels.
European ministers are trying to agree on common positions on the proposed laws to achieve the goal of reducing emissions by 55% by 2030 compared to 1990 levels.
At the same time, the global energy crisis is forcing some countries to be more cautious about the potential failure of reforms.
It is noted that more detailed information on proposals for climate change will be discussed in further talks on June 28. Some diplomats are concerned that proposals such as banning petrol and diesel cars by 2035 could eventually be relaxed.
In addition, EU energy ministers also had to discuss options for jointly reducing short-term gas demand to cope with possible further cuts in supplies from Russia. The European Commission is preparing to present a plan next month to coordinate steps to prepare for further cuts in supplies amid the war in Ukraine.
Before EcoPolitics reported that The European Commission will propose a bill, which will oblige the countries of the Union to restore 20% of their natural areas by 2030 and all degraded ecosystems by the middle of the century.
