Kyiv residents ask local authorities for solar power plants instead of new pavement and parks

They believe that preparation for winter should be a priority

Kyiv residents have already created 2 petitions on the Kyiv City Council's e-petition website aimed at better preparing the city for the winter period in the face of war. In the first of them, Kyiv resident Serhiy Lebid asks to reallocate the city's budget in favor of power generation. In the second one, Sergiy Slyuz recommends installing a solar power plant to provide uninterrupted power to electric pumps of the capital's water supply sources.

This was reported by Informator.ua.

On June 7, Serhiy Lebid created a petition proposing to reallocate the city's budget to purchase and install power generation infrastructure.

"I am asking you to reduce or stop financing the construction, repair and reconstruction of non-obligatory facilities, such as: bridge crossings, transport interchanges, parks, squares, parking lots, etc.," the activist wrote in the appeal.

He also suggests analyzing the efficiency of utility companies and cutting funding to inefficient ones, as well as reviewing social support programs and removing funding from them as well.

"There is actually very little time left before the heating season. It is necessary to invest time in analyzing the problem, developing a solution, purchasing components, logistics, installation and commissioning. Therefore, it is necessary to give a significant part of the budget for this direction already at the next session of the city council", Serhii Lebid is confident.

The petition has already collected 1,406 signatures. In order for it to be considered by the Kyiv City Council, 6,000 votes are needed. There are 49 days left.

On June 17, Kyiv resident Serhiy Slyuz also appealed to the local authorities with a similar appeal – not to move the cobblestones, but to prepare for winter. He proposes to install solar power plants for uninterrupted power supply of electric pumps of pumping stations and other sources of water supply in the capital.

"Since, under the conditions of Russian aggression, Ukraine has lost a significant part of electricity generation sources, as reported by DTEK, with the prospect of outages up to 20 hours a day (4 hours with electricity), the government should take care of alternative power sources. In the capital, this should be done by the KMDA, instead of laying cobblestones on Bohdan Khmelnytskyi and opening parks and bridges unnecessary in wartime conditions. Provided that solar power plants with batteries are installed and connected to the capital's water systems, we will have a chance not to be left without water in homes. At the very least, shorten the periods of water absence as much as possible," he said.

At the time of writing, the petition has already collected 32 signatures. Voting will continue for another 59 days.

It is worth noting that at the session of the Kyiv City Council on May 16, 2024, the deputies decided to change the heat supply and energy supply system and build 6 mini-CHP plants with a total capacity of 619 MW in the capital. They can work on different types of fuel and produce both heat and electricity. This will require up to €1.2 billion and 12-15 years. The first batch of equipment is promised to be installed by the end of 2024. This will make it possible to create energy islands in the capital – zones where there will always be heat, light and water.

In April, EcoPolitic wrote about the fact that at the "Energia" waste incineration plant in Kyiv a large-scale modernization of the flue gas chemical cleaning system will be carried out.
