The Kyiv region plans to launch a modern project for the management of solid household waste and to produce energy from it.
This was announced by the head of the Kyiv Military Administration, Mykola Kalashnyk, on his Telegram channel.
A new policy on solid waste management is being launched in the Kyiv region, and the Kyiv region is set to become the first region in this field.
“The waste situation in the region is not very good: we have a large number of uncontrolled landfills. Sometimes, these are dozens of hectares of garbage without the necessary infrastructure—without weight control, drainage, or accounting,” said the head of the Kyiv Regional Military Administration.
The head of the military administration says that the goal is to minimize uncontrolled landfills by sorting household waste, transforming landfills into modern waste processing sites. This is because some waste can be reused.

Special attention is paid to the production of energy from waste.
“At some landfills, we are already working on extracting landfill gas (biogas) and converting it into electricity. This will not only reduce harmful emissions but also provide a new source of energy,” he said.

Particular attention is paid to construction waste, which has become very abundant during the war. Together with international partners, a system for its processing has been established, including secondary use, for example, as road fill.
“We must foster a culture of waste management, teaching children and adults to sort waste and use things and resources sparingly. Only in this way can we reduce the amount of waste and make life more environmentally friendly,” he added.

As EcoPolitic wrote earlier, almost all solid waste landfills in our country are currently not legally allowed to operate.
