A red cloud of ammonia rose into the sky in the Bakhmut district of Donetsk region due to enemy shelling. The leak of dangerous gas occurred due to damage to the Russian army by the tightness of the branch of the ammonia pipeline "Togliatti - Odesa".

On May 30, the head of the regional military administration Pavlo Kyrylenko told Telegram about the possible danger to the population.

"This branch has not been used since 2014, the valves are closed, but ammonia is now flowing out of it. A cloud of ammonia is moving over the ground from the village of Travneve towards Bakhmut," the head of the OBA wrote.

Kyrylenko noted that rescuers conducted a survey - the section of the 7.5 km pipeline contains approximately 250 tons of ammonia.

According to him, 45 specialists and 9 tankers were involved in the liquidation of the consequences of the accident. Kodema, Gladosovo, Semigirya, Dacha, Mykolayivka Druha and Dolomitne were in the affected area.

Local authorities have informed the public about the necessary security measures. There is no information about the victims.

It should be added that a video has appeared on the Internet showing Ukrainian servicemen saying that there was an ammonia leak after the explosion and calling for wearing gas masks to protect themselves from deadly chemical fumes. Then a large red cloud appears in the frame, rising above the building where the ammonia was stored.

WARNING! The video contains obscene language.

Kirilenko later added that the spread of gas from the ammonia pipeline damaged by Russian shelling is about 2 kilometers. There is no danger for settlements, he assured.

Rescuers are monitoring the situation and are ready to neutralize the gas cloud if necessary.

But the ammonia pipeline was inoperable, so the maximum radius of damage may be 4 km, now its (gas - ed.) Distribution is slightly more than 2 km. There is no great threat to settlements. The Ministry of Emergencies is monitoring how it will be distributed (gas - ed.), And crews are on duty in nine cars.

The Center for Strategic Communications and Information Security has published instructions on how to act in the event of an ammonia odor, what are the signs of ammonia poisoning and what to do in such a scenario.

Before EcoPolitics wrote how to act in case of danger ammonia poisoning.
