Spain and Denmark announced on the eve of the voting that they could join the lawsuit

Austria has announced that it will take the EU to court over the controversial designation of nuclear and gas projects as environmental investments.

Luxembourg also joined the initiative, reported Euratians.

Back in November 2021, Austria announced its intention to sue if the taxonomy included nuclear power, and followed through on that promise after the European Parliament failed to muster a majority to oppose the delegated act.

"We have already intensively prepared for this case in recent weeks and months and will file our lawsuit within the deadline," Climate Minister Leonora Gewessler said.

She also emphasized that such a decision does not meet the ambitions of the Green Deal.

"It is not credible, it is not ambitious and it is not based on knowledge, it endangers our future and it is more than irresponsible," she said.

"We will consider further legal steps together with Austria," Luxembourg Energy Minister Claude Turmes wrote on Twitter.

Spain and Denmark announced before the vote that they were also considering joining the lawsuit.

However, Germany, which initially said it would consider legal action, ultimately decided not to follow suit.

The article noted that Austria, which decided not to rely on nuclear power plants in the 1970s, has been a long-time critic of including nuclear energy in the taxonomy of green finance across party lines. All but one of the Austrian MEPs voted against the taxonomy.
