On June 16-20, Brussels will host a bilateral meeting between the EU and Ukraine on Chapter 27, “Environment and Climate Change,” during which Ukraine will present its current progress in implementing EU standards, key challenges, and next steps.
This important event for European integration was announced by the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine.
The ministry emphasized that this is a key event dedicated to the role of environmental policy in Ukraine's European integration. It should be noted that Chapter 27 covers more than 200 EU legal acts and is one of the most difficult to negotiate due to its scope and cross-sectoral nature.
Ukraine will present presentations to its European partners in the following areas:
- climate policy (trading in greenhouse gas emission allowances, ozone-depleting substances, and fluorinated greenhouse gases);
- environmental assessment and noise control;
- waste management (extractive industry waste, packaging, batteries, and hazardous waste);
- water management (drinking water, wastewater, marine strategy, Nitrates Directive);
- air quality and industrial pollution;
- nature conservation (Birds and Habitats Directives, Regulation on nature restoration and invasive alien species);
- chemicals regulation (REACH, CLP, etc.).
Earlier, during simulation sessions, participants discussed Ukraine's main achievements, identified gaps and challenges, and ways to accelerate the implementation of the EU acquis in the field of environmental and climate protection.
Particular attention was paid to the question of what added value Ukraine's membership could bring to the European Union's environmental policy. They also discussed how to effectively use existing European financial instruments and mechanisms for Ukraine's “green” post-war recovery.
"We have done our homework and are ready for dialogue in Brussels. The simulation sessions were a key stage that allowed us to form a common environmental vision among all parties involved," said Olga Yukhymchuk, Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine for European Integration.
