Ukrainian biomethane was exported abroad for the first time in February 2025

Last year, Ukrainian producers began exporting biomethane for the first time in history. In total, 11.2 million cubic meters of gaseous biomethane produced by three companies were delivered to foreign consumers.

This was reported by NV media with reference to ExPro Consulting.

The first batch of Ukrainian biomethane was sent abroad by VITAGRO back in February 2025. The batch contained 67.5 cubic meters of biofuel and was delivered to Slovakia via the gas transmission system.

Ukrainian exporters

Three Ukrainian companies were involved in exports in 2025. Gaseous methane was shipped in 2025 by:

  • MHP Holding. The company exported about 8.7 million cubic meters of gas abroad, which accounted for 77% of total exports.
  • The VITAGRO Group exported about 2.5 million cubic meters of biomethane.
  • The "Hals Agro" agroholding made a pilot export shipment of 75 cubic meters of gas.

Additionally, in 2025, liquefied biomethane was exported abroad. Two companies exported it. The aforementioned MHP shipped more than 5,000 t of product, while YM Liquid Gas exported about 900 t.

EcoPolitic previously reported that European countries increased biomethane production to 22 billion cubic meters per year.

In Chernivtsi, there are plans to build a CHP plant that will produce biofuel from waste. Overall, landfills in Ukraine currently produce 25% of biogas.
