A large amount of toxic substances got into the soil due to the discharge of petroleum products in the Odesa region. This happened because of the abuse of office by a high-ranking official.

The director of the company that manages the solid waste landfill is accused of allowing the discharge of hazardous liquid waste into the soil without the required documentation.

This was reported by the press service of the Odesa Regional Prosecutor's Office.

According to the investigation, the official allowed the waste to be dumped at the landfill for his own benefit, without considering the risks to the environment and without the appropriate license. The dumped substance had a high content of petroleum products, as it was formed by washing the holds of oil tankers. The waste was illegally transported from ports and delivered to the landfill for “further disposal.”

The high-ranking official was charged under Article 236 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. It provides for a term of imprisonment of 5 to 10 years, as well as the deprivation of the right to hold certain positions or engage in certain activities for a period of up to 3 years.
