Francis has made environmental protection a cornerstone of his pontificate

Pope Francis has said that recent heat waves in many parts of the world and floods have shown that more urgent action is needed to combat climate change.

He urged the world to quickly abandon oil, reports ZAWYA.

"Please, I again call on world leaders to do something more concrete to limit polluting emissions," said Pope Francis. "This is an urgent challenge, it cannot be postponed, it concerns everyone. Let's protect our common home."

It is noted that Francis has identified environmental protection as the cornerstone of his pontificate. Thus, in a 2015 pastoral letter, he noted that the planet "is beginning to look more and more like a huge pile of dirt."

The material said that the Pope expressed solidarity with those who suffer from the climate crisis and those who help them.

Earlier, EcoPolitic wrote, that in 2022 Pope Francis called on all believers and social leaders to care for the environment and combat climate change. He noted that this is a moral duty of humanity.

As EcoPolitic reported earlier, in Greece on the island of Rhodes, a large-scale forest fire occurred, which destroyed the island for about a week and also forced the evacuation of thousands of tourists and local residents. The fire threatened the well-being of Rhodes, because almost 90% of the local economy depends on tourism.
