The ban provides for frequent and comfortable railway routes

In France, domestic flights on short routes, which can be covered by train in less than two and a half hours, have been banned.

While it will reduce global emissions from aviation by 2%, the initiative will create new opportunities to reduce emissions in other sectors, Al Jazeera reported.

It said the ban would mostly apply to flights between Paris and regional hubs such as Nantes, Lyon and Bordeaux. However, it will not apply to connecting flights. The ban provides for frequent and comfortable routes to meet the needs of air passengers.

The material said that this happened during a discussion of ways to reduce emissions from private aircraft in France.

Max Boykoff, chair of environmental studies at the University of Colorado, emphasized that carbon emissions from rail are about one-third of those from air travel. The transport sector creates about 25-30% of all human emissions.

The material emphasized that such a ban was included in the climate law of 2021 and was already applied in practice. However, some airlines appealed to the European Commission to verify the legality of the decision.

As EcoPolitic previously reported, the largest airport in the Netherlands, Schiphol, located in Amsterdam, wants to ban private planes from 2026.
